The History of the Aglione

For centuries, the tradition of growing and using Aglione in Valdichiana has been carried on, making its way into our present-day culinary practices. Unlike common garlic, Aglione continues to be a staple in many traditional recipes.

Dating back to the Etruscans, this unique variety of garlic has been a cornerstone of the region's cuisine. Renowned for its health benefits, it has long been used as a remedy for various ailments. The Etruscans passed it on to the Romans, who cherished and spread it further, reaching places as far as Egypt and Turkey. However, it almost vanished under the rule of the Papal States.

Despite this, Aglione remained beloved by families in the Valdichiana and Val D'Orcia regions, preserving its legacy to this day. Orto Fortunato has revived its cultivation, celebrating its distinct flavor and promoting its beneficial and purifying properties.

Aglione has long been a staple in both cooking and medicine. Back in ancient Egypt, both garlic and Aglione were used to treat tumors and abscesses.
